Safe area is an important but often overlooked part of preparing artwork for print. While bleed protects the edges of your design, the safe area protects the content inside the page — such as text, logos and important details.
Understanding safe area helps ensure nothing important is accidentally trimmed off during production.
What is the safe area?
The safe area is the margin inside the final trimmed size of a printed item where all important elements should be placed. This includes:
- Text
- Logos
- Contact details
- QR codes
- Important imagery
As a general rule, these elements should sit at least 5–6mm inside the finished edge.
Why is safe area important?
During trimming, paper can move very slightly. Even with precise cutting, there is always a small tolerance. If text or logos are placed too close to the edge, there’s a risk they could be cut off or appear uneven once trimmed.
Using a safe area allows for this small movement and ensures the finished item looks neat and professional.
Safe area vs bleed
Safe area and bleed are often mentioned together, but they serve different purposes:
- Bleed sits outside the finished size and allows colour or images to run to the edge
- Safe area sits inside the finished size and protects important content
Both are essential for professional print results.
How much safe area should I allow?
For most printed items, we recommend keeping all important elements at least 5–6mm from the edge.
For very small items, such as business cards, this may be slightly reduced, but it’s still important to avoid placing text too close to the edge.
What happens if I ignore the safe area?
Ignoring the safe area can lead to:
- Cropped text or logos
- Uneven margins
- A rushed or unprofessional appearance
- The need for reprints
These issues are avoidable with simple layout planning.
How do I set safe area in my artwork?
Most design programs allow you to:

Even if your software doesn’t have a dedicated safe area setting, manually allowing space works just as well.
